Back in September 1997, fellow BTTF fan Karen McLeod gave me an interesting suggestion--why not have an interactive BTTF story? So, after giving it a few months of thought on precisely how to go about such a thing, I decided to do just that! Now, for all you budding writers, here are some guidelines:
1) Write a section by chapter. I don't care how long it is, though at least three pages would be good. And try to keep it no more than ten.
2) I will normally be updating this page approximately every two weeks, thereby giving someone two weeks to write a chapter. Should I get no chapters in the two weeks, I'll wait until I get one. I will accept the next chapter for this "interactive" story by taking the ones that are best written, not which one comes in first. That way, someone can spend a bit of time and thought on their writing instead of rushing it. I will accept only one chapter per person for this story, thereby giving everyone a chance at this instead of a couple select people. If I do not get any submissions within the two weeks, however, I will accept chapters from previous submitters. The next deadline for the next chapter can be found at the bottom of the page.
3) Follow the rules of what has already been written and stay true to the BTTF characters. (If you invent new characters, that's fine.) If you end up writing, say, the fifth chapter, please follow the storyline as it exists to that point. Don't make contradictory remarks, please! Speaking from a writer's point of view, that sucks when someone does that. It's like someone is dissing your writing. And it doesn't make for a good story flow. Okay?
4) I will exercise creative restraint and will not garble your writing with my own ideas and views (that's why I have my own stories!), but I will make basic punctuation and spelling corrections of the chapters when I put them up on the internet. Basic editor stuff that will make writing just look and flow better!
5) Remember, the films are rated PG--so keep the writing there as well. Anything that wasn't in the films in terms of swear words, etc, you'd better leave out of the story!
6) You will be give full credit for your part of the story. When submitting your chapter, leave your name and an e-mail and/or web page address that is yours so I can put a link to it. That way people can give you feedback. Should your segment be chosen to be the next to be put up, I will e-mail you with the news.
7) The title of this story is up to you as well. I am a horrible story-titler, as you may be able to tell! Once we get this sucker going, send in some suggestions and I'll whittle the choices down to three, which I'll then ask people to vote on. Feel free to start doing this now.
8) Finally, e-mail me your contributions at future1985@aol.com. I use a Macintosh, so to ensure compatibility please use Microsoft Word, SimpleText, Clarisworks, the rarely used Write Now, or a basic text file if attaching a file. If I can't read it, I can't use it. Comprendé? If all else fails, you could always paste it into the text of a succession of e-mails! That works fine, from my experience.
